Water Utility Maintenance Field GIS Application
Presentation Abstract
United Water Pennsylvania contracted with Buchart-Horn, Inc. to develop an ArcMap application for their field personnel to use when maintaining valve and hydrants. Initially the maintenance information was maintained on 5"x8" cards. The front of the card contained the maintenance information about the particular valve or hydrant and the back of the card contained a sketch of exactly where the valve or hydrant was located in the system. In order to maintain the sketches and continue to use them in the GIS application, over 8000 cards were scanned and jpg images of the sketches were created. A table was added to United Water's geodatabase containing the location of the sketch and the feature it was linked to. We created an ArcMap application that provides the user with forms that they can use to view and update maintenance information. The scanned image associated with the valve or hydrant of interest is also loaded in to the form. The application also contains a reporting function that allows users to produce reports on maintenance done on a daily basis or a range of ates. The application has proved to be useful in the effort to move to a more digital atmosphere and have digital records of maintenance.
