Visioning Communities: The 3D GIS Approach
Presentation Abstract
Use of 3D visualization is becoming more common in the planning of sustainable and healthy communities. Although our surrounding is in three dimensions, we – the GIS users - always used to assume that the public would understand all of our 2D maps. Since several years the growing transformation of GIS map presentation from 2D to 3D has been providing a great impact on the visual representation of GIS data. A 3D map always reads better than a 2D one and that is why a virtual 3D simulation could be very convincing in public meetings. If communities can visualize how their neighborhoods would look like after 10 years, they could make more positive impact in their decision making process or community design process. With the examples of a number of research projects of the Center for Sustainable Communities at Temple University, PA, this paper will describe how and using which tools or software 3D GIS can be efficiently used in Growth Management Plan, Buildout Scenario, Neighborhood Redevelopment, and Floodplain Delineation.
