Penn Pilot: An Online Library of Historical Aerial Photogrpahy
Presentation Abstract
The Pennsylvania Geologic Survey and the State Archives maintain collections of historic aerial photography dating from 1937 to present. These photographs are routinely used in a variety of cultural, scientific, and civic projects. However, access is limited to those willing to travel to the Survey or Archives in Harrisburg. In an effort to make this resource more widely accessible, the Geologic Survey has undertaken a program to digitally scan the photographic prints and make them available through an interactive map-based web application—Penn Pilot. Approximately 40,000 images from 1937-1942 are currently online, and work to scan the 1960’s collection is underway. This presentation will demonstrate the Penn Pilot application and provide background on the project and the historic aerial photographs.
