The Six Minute Window – GIS Guides Improvements To Emergency Medical Service Response in South Georgia
Presentation Abstract
This presentation focuses on the efforts of one local hospital authority to respond more quickly to critical heart and trauma-related calls. With these types of calls, a 6 minute-or-less response is the foundation for successful treatment and life-saving attention. Beginning with the analysis of past calls for service and typical availability of responders, GIS identifies some alarming weaknesses in this 6 minute window. From that, failure rates are calculated and examined. This presentation illustrates the many other ways that response data was analyzed such as time of day, population clusters (current and projected), day of week, etc

Chris Strom is currently the GIS Program Manager for South Georgia Regional Development Center in Valdosta, GA. Mr. Strom’s record of service at the Regional Development Center began in 1989 with his assistance to develop and implement Geographic Information Systems in South Georgia. With over a dozen years of experience with GIS technology, Mr. Strom has successfully assisted rural local governments with the deployment and utilization of GIS technology to support decision-making in Georgia.
