Introduction to ArcMap & ArcCatalog 9.1 for the GIS Novice
Presentation Abstract
A crash course in ArcMap and ArcCatalog 9.1, we will explore the basic functionality of both programs. Included in this session will be the basics of data management using ArcCatalog and viewing and manipulating data layers in ArcMap. Come one, come all, no GIS experience is needed for this hands-on workshop.

Chihiro Mather Project Associate: RGIS Penn State - Geospatial Technology Program, Land Analysis Lab
Chihiro Koshimizu Mather was born in Shimizu, Japan. She came to the United States to study economics at the University of Nevada, Reno. She obtained her BA and MA in Economics from the University of Nevada, Reno. Her thesis dealt with the impact on local government financing by urban sprawl utilizing GIS technology. She further developed her GIS skills while in graduate school working at the Nevada Small Business Development Center. She provided demographic, market, competitor, and traffic analyses for various trade areas and small business clients using a GIS. She has been working under Dr. Rick Day at the Land Analysis Lab for two and a half years.
Leah Wasser Extention Assistant: RGIS Penn State - Geospatial Technology Program, Land Analysis Lab
Leah has a Master of Landscape Architecture in Watershed Stewardship from Penn State. She spent a year of national service with the AmeriCorps program in Rural Pennsylvania; here she spent time developing a GIS for large-scale grassroots recreational planning efforts. Leah has spent time as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn State where she taught courses in digital communication, 3d modeling, design and design theory. In May of 2003, she accepted a position with the Geospatial Technology Program, Land Analysis Laboratory at Penn State (RGIS Chesapeake). As a research associate for the GTP, her project focus has included planning and growth visualization, website and graphic development, and developing GIS curriculum for both youth / 4-H groups and adults. She remains involved with the Department of Landscape Architecture and is actively pursuing a PhD in ecology.
